DUP Deputy Leader Nigel Dodds has welcomed a clear statement from the Secretary of State today that internal issues within Northern Ireland are a matter for the United Kingdom alone to deal with. He was speaking after raising the issue during Northern Ireland Questions in the House of Commons.

The North Belfast MP said, “Today, instead of taking their seats in Parliament, taking their place in the Assembly or working in the Executive, Sinn Fein are in Dublin pleading with their political opponents for relevance and asking for more Dublin interference in the internal affairs of Northern Ireland.

“The Secretary of State repeated clearly today that issues internal to Northern Ireland are a matter only for the UK government and the House of Commons to deal with. Indeed, that is also the Irish government’s position in recognition of the three-stranded process which has been in place for many years. Strand One matters do not involve the Republic of Ireland despite what Sinn Fein may wish.

“Such a statement from the Secretary of State should be in no way surprising to anyone. It is merely a recognition of the constitutional status of Northern Ireland. Those who talk most loudly about fulfilling previous agreements should think more about this before travelling to Dublin asking for a key foundation of all agreements in Northern Ireland to be breached.”
